Hello, future Aviator!
Moving day
On the Saturday afternoon I arrived, Sebring welcomed me with a warm hug. On my way to the neighborhood where I’d be staying, I sent a text to a member of Rexair to let him know when I’d be arriving. Looking out the window, the scenery of such a beautiful city, with all the lakes surrounding the area, captivated me, and I imagined how much better it would look from above.
Moving to a different state was a very hard decision, especially since I did not know much about the area. But the people I’ve encountered so far are supportive, making sure you feel welcomed in the community.
As soon as I arrived at the residence, the essentials to start the program were given to me, and as a result I did not waste any time to plan out the schedule for the week, making sure that all my activities were balanced out to ensure greater overall performance.
DAY 1
It was 5 am, and my day started with a fruit bowl. Shortly after enjoying such a delicacy, I made sure everything was ready and waited for the instructor in order to head to the airport. Now the real lesson began. We immediately started with ground knowledge, covering the four forces of flight and some of the information we would need when flying.
After reviewing the basics we headed toward the plane, an RV-12. The instructor demonstrated a proper takeoff and skills that are expected at all times, making it feel and look natural while being aware of the surroundings, and holding a calm composure as he processed information given through the radio. There were a lot of things to admire from the plane. And as we landed, a set of expectations was set in motion that marked the start of a great aviation career.
COMMUNITY
A couple of days have passed. We gathered for a meeting to share our thoughts on a topic and got to know the other students in the program. They all have their experiences to share and stories of how they got to their current ratings. Shortly after the meeting we went for dinner and enjoyed the time together. It sure was fun to be with a group that has a common goal and mindset. It was not the last time we all gathered though–we have played pool, had more dinner gatherings, celebrated milestones, and have been able to study together for mutual growth. Overall, one can say that we enjoy ourselves in and outside the program, always looking out for each other.
solo!!!
It’s been around a month. The instructor lets me know that it’s the day for my first solo, that all my hard work is going to be reflected on this flight. The only thing he wanted from me was three landings with him to confirm that all would go well when sending me alone.
It was like any other day. We had already been over the procedures so many times that it felt natural. We taxied back to the FBO and he got out of the plane. The conditions were perfect: it was an evening with a clear sky and a beautiful sunset. My first attempt to land wasn’t as desired; it was safer to go around to try once more, and this time it was as smooth as butter. It was a great landing. A milestone that will always be remembered.
What I’ve learned so far
It feels good to know that I am closer to having my private pilot license. It has not been an easy goal but it sure is fun doing something you like. I had to balance my schedule to provide time for myself and for my aviation life. Then again, my performance is a reflection of my personal life.
What I felt necessary was an environment that would actually explain the concepts. At Rexair they make sure you have a visual idea of what concepts in aviation look like and will explain things in different ways to ensure you are on the right track . There are even multiple stage checks to ensure one is actually learning, making you feel supported throughout the program. As of November, I am looking forward to taking the written test in the next couple of weeks, and if all goes well I will have my PPL soon!
